On October 2019 in an effort to reach out and help the least of our brethren, the Province of St. Vincent Ferrer, through the initiative of the Provincial Prioress Sr. Cecilia Hsu and her Council has approved the financial aid to the charitable projects of the Institute. A total of 8 projects have been identified which benefited poor families and communities in Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines and Spain. Likewise, on July 2020 another financial package has been allotted to help alleviate the sufferings of victims of the Covid 19 pandemic. The beneficiaries were affected communities in Spain, the Philippines. Cambodia, Italy and Chile. All these good deeds were accomplished through the intermediary of the General Curia and the Sisters assigned in these mission places.

從2019年10月份開始，試著至少接觸並幫助我們自己的姊妹們，聖文生省會省許會長及諮議員們代表省會，發起修全修會的財務及物資援助愛德計畫。目前認可的計畫總共有8，將幫助在柬埔寨、緬甸、泰國及菲律賓和西班牙的窮苦家庭及團體。同樣的在2020年的七月份，一些經濟物資已經分派給因為Covid 19疫情而影響生活的受難者，來減輕疫情帶來的傷害。受惠者遍佈在西班牙、菲律賓、柬埔寨、義大利及智利等。所有這些愛德計畫都是透過羅馬總會及派令在這些國家的修會修女們完成的。

While caring for the displaced families in Loikaw, the Sisters recognized the urgent need for children's education. After consulting with the Dominican friars and local parents, they agreed to open a school and formed an education committee. The committee soon began building a temporary school using tents, with parents and volunteers gathering bamboo and wood for construction. Meanwhile, the sisters searched for qualified teachers and prepared school essentials.
The initial expenses were funded by the Province of Taiwan: wooden planks, tents, land preparation, and other operational needs—making it possible for the school to open. Shortly thereafter, the Dominican friars pledged their support by covering all teacher salaries, while our congregation continued to fund water supply, tents, well construction, and boarding facilities. On June 25, 2022, after much preparation, the sisters held the opening ceremony for St. Catherine School, with the Dominican friars presiding and offering a blessing. Sr. Francis Polo, OP, the school principal, encouraged students and teachers to dedicate themselves fully to their mission of learning. The school welcomed 190 students from grades 6 to 12. The sisters distributed school bags, notebooks, and other supplies. The faculty included 17 teachers—comprising Dominican fathers, our sisters, and lay volunteers. With the support of our congregation, three tents were used as classrooms and nine as student dormitories. The overwhelming number of students was a clear sign of their eagerness to learn. However, running a school in such conditions remains extremely challenging: there is a lack of desks and chairs, an ongoing shortage of clean water for drinking and cooking, and—above all—the constant threat of airstrikes. To reduce risk, trenches were dug around the classrooms and dormitories so that everyone could take cover during emergencies. Although this cannot guarantee complete safety, it is currently the best precaution available. Through these hardships, the sisters and villagers have built strong bonds of trust and friendship. As the situation worsened, all six villages were eventually abandoned and left in ruins. Our convent The building was severely damaged by gunfire and partially occupied by soldiers. It became impossible for the sisters to remain there, so the entire community relocated to the forest, settling in a small hut beside the school and living among the refugees. Now in its third year, St. Catherine School continues to operate thanks to the dedication of the sisters and teachers, as well as the steadfast support of our congregation. The number of students continues to grow, with families from faraway areas asking to enroll their children. While this is encouraging, it also raises serious concerns. Larger gatherings can attract unwanted attention and increase the risk of airstrikes and other military threats. Currently, more than 200 students are enrolled, including about 20 boarders. As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we are repairing or rebuilding damaged wooden structures and tents, which have deteriorated under harsh weather conditions. Though our sisters continue to serve with remarkable courage and generosity, the situation remains dangerous. With no clear end in sight to Myanmar’s civil war and political crisis, we continue to hope that conditions will improve, allowing displaced people to return to their homes—and our community to reclaim the convent, now left in ruins. As time goes on, it is crucial to remember that this school operates in a high-risk area and must remain hidden from the government. This is because it follows the educational framework established by the interim government opposing the military regime. Therefore, though still running, the school must always be prepared to shut down or relocate at a moment’s notice. If discovered, the sisters could face serious danger. This reality shapes every aspect of our mission. With ongoing support from the congregation, particularly from the Province of St. Vincent Ferrer, Taiwan, our mission goes far beyond running a school. We are also supporting the displaced families from five nearby villages. In addition to providing education, the sisters offer humanitarian aid—food, shelter, clothing, blankets, and medical care. Together with the Dominican friars, they serve the spiritual needs of the community through catechism, youth formation, and retreats. Despite the many hardships—bitterly cold winters, scorching summers, impassable roads during the rainy season, the terror of airstrikes, and countless other difficulties—the sisters in Myanmar remain faithfully present. They serve the poor and vulnerable with unwavering love, embodying the Gospel in action. (May 2025) |
Mientras cuidaban de las familias desplazadas en Loikaw, las hermanas reconocieron la urgente necesidad de educación para los niños. Tras consultar con los frailes dominicos y los padres de familia locales, acordaron abrir una escuela y formaron un comité de educación. Pronto, el comité comenzó a construir una escuela temporal utilizando carpas, mientras que los padres y voluntarios recolectaban bambú y madera para la construcción. Mientras tanto, las hermanas buscaban maestros calificados y preparaban los materiales esenciales para la escuela.

Sin embargo, dirigir una escuela en estas condiciones sigue siendo extremadamente desafiante: hay una falta de escritorios y sillas, una continua escasez de agua potable para beber y cocinar, y, por encima de todo, la constante amenaza de ataques aéreos. Junto con los frailes dominicos, atienden las necesidades espirituales de la comunidad a través de la catequesis, la formación juvenil y los retiros. A pesar de las muchas dificultades —inviernos extremadamente fríos, veranos abrasadores, caminos intransitables durante la temporada de lluvias, el terror de los ataques aéreos y muchas otras adversidades— las hermanas en Myanmar permanecen fielmente presentes. The 5,000 US dollars or 3,567,000.00 Chilean peso that we received from you through the General Econome arrived at a very opportune time. Chile has already been very much affected by the social upheavals of September 2019 followed by the pandemic all the year 2020 which we are still suffering. People in San Vicente, Chillán, almost all of Santiago and most part of Chile are in total quarantine. At the same time we have had three days of intense rains day and night as the culmination of everything, it seemed that the floodgates of the sky had been opened, this was the cause of large mudslides from the foothills that dragged stones and mud along with the
waterways , destroying everything in its path thus , bringing more destructions to hundreds of houses. The Sisters tried to help those who are worst off and have no savings to get ahead. We prioritized those acquaintances and the students from our school, we have tried to help them [roviding with what they needed most. When we went to visit, a poor lady was washing using her hands the four things that she had been able to recover from the mud and the stones. His hands were already sore from scrubbing the cloth covered in reddish mud. In the afternoon we brought her a washing machine. When we left it, the lady in her joy rushed over to give us a hug. In another household, we brought food merchandise, but they had no place to cook it. So we brought them a stove and kitchen utensils. When we left, the man of the house cried in thanksgiving. We were told of an elderly lady; the electrical system of her entire house was destroyed during the thunderstorms., plugs, bulbs, ... The electrician suggested to change the whole installation, there was no basis of repair for everything was very old already and damaged. The lady is a retiree who receive a very small pension that does not reach the end of the month, to meet both ends she does small jobs to feed herself and the family, aside from the fact that the medicines which are very expensive take the entire pension. This lady and her family should have remained in the dark for the rest of her life, considering the amount needed for a new electric installation consisted of more than half a million pesos, we gave her 600,000 pesos to restore light to her home. We started the School year in March 2021 as usual, but all online classes. Therefore, each student must have a computer to follow the classes. One of our students who did not have a computer, the daughter of a mother seperated frrom her husband, who also has two other children, had no possibility of buying it, since it cost 400,000 pesos, nor did the good woman have it, nor could she get it, so we bought the computer for her daughter so that she would be able to continue her studies. Muy querida Priora Provincial de Taiwán, los 5.000 dólares que recibí de vuestra parte, y que me envió la Ecónoma General, han llegado en un momento muy oportuno, pues si ya estaba Chile muy castigado por el estallido social de septiembre de 2019 seguido de la pandemia todo el año 2020 y que aún estamos sufriendo, pues nuestro pueblo, San Vicente, Chillán, casi todo Santiago y mucho más de Chile estamos en cuarentena total, hemos tenido como colofón de todo tres días de lluvias intensas día y noche, parecía que se habían abierto las compuertas del cielo, esto fue causa de grandes aluviones en la pre cordillera que arrastraba junto con el agua piedras y fango, a su paso lo destruía todo y así, destruidas quedaron más de cien casas.
A las que están peor y no tienen ningún ahorro para salir adelante, siendo además conocidas o de niñas del colegio, las hemos procurado ayudar con lo que tenían de más necesidad. Cuando fuimos a verlas estaba una pobre señora lavando a mano las cuatro cosas que había podido recuperar entre el barro y las piedras. Las manos las tenía desechas de frotar en las telas llenas de barro rojizo. Por la tarde le llevamos una lavadora. Cuando se la dejamos, la señora se abalanzó a darnos un abrazo. En otra casa, le habían llevado mercadería, pero la pobre no tenía donde cocinarla. Así que por la tarde le llevamos una lavadora y una cocina. Al marcharnos el señor de la casa lloraba dándonos las gracias. Nos dijeron de una señora anciana que con las tormentas eléctricas que tuvimos se le había fundido la electricidad de toda su casita: enchufes, bombillas,.. El electricista le dijo que no había arreglo pues todo era muy viejo, que tenía que cambiar la instalación completa. Aquí los jubilados reciben una mísera pensión que no les llega a fin de mes, por lo que si pueden hacen pequeños trabajos para poderse alimentar, pues las medicinas que son muy caras se les lleva toda la pensión. Esta señora que dijimos al principio, jubilada de hace muchos años y sin poder trabajar, se tendría que haber quedado a oscuras para el resto de su vida, así que sabiendo que la instalación constaba más de medio millón de pesos, le dimos 600.000 pesos para que pudiera también comprar las bombillas. Hemos empezado el curso 2021 en marzo como de costumbre, pero la forma de hacerlo ha sido original, no presencial como de costumbre, sino que ha sido on line. Por tanto, cada alumna tiene que tener un ordenador para seguir las clases. Una alumna nuestra que no tenía ordenador, hija de una mamá separada que tiene además otros dos hijos, no tenía posibilidad de comprárselo, pues 400.000 pesos que costaba, ni los tenía la buena mujer, ni los podía conseguir, así que le compramos el ordenador a la niña para que no perdiera el curso. El hijo de una empleada del colegio se rompió un pie y necesitaba operación, pero aquí no hay seguridad social y si no se deposita el dinero de la operación antes de hacérsela no la hacen. Como la familia no tenía dinero, pues normalmente todas las familias viven al día, y además la mamá, o sea, nuestra empleada también está pendiente de una operación que le cuesta más de un millón y medio de pesos, le aportamos para la operación del niño, pues corría el peligro de que le hiciera callo y quedara cojo para toda la vida, le aportamos decía, el millón setecientos mil que nos quedaba. Los profesores hicieron una colecta para completar lo que costaba la operación y que pudieran operarle. Le operaron ayer por la tarde (23/4/2021). Esperamos haber llegado a tiempo y que quede bien. El saldo de 15.455 pesos que nos quedó lo gastamos en chocolate y galletas para unos niños que pasan bastante necesidad, a los que el año pasado la Comunidad les compró zapatos pues en pleno invierno andaban con los deditos de los pies fuera y sin calcetines. También se les proporciona, de vez en cuando, cajas de mercadería. Adjunto también la factura. Muchas gracias por la donación, en todo momento nos vendrá bien lo que nos den, pues siempre hay necesidades a donde aplicar las limosnas. Sor Ma.
