The Provincial Chapter of 2023 expressed the desire to open a new mission in Malaysia. Although this plan did not come to fruition, the hope for a new missionary presence remained alive. Upon the suggestion of Sr. Jean Bergado, who was appointed to coordinate the project, a new possibility emerged: instead of Malaysia, an exploratory visit could be made to Indonesia and East Timor. Embracing this new direction, the first visit took place in June 2025. Sr. Victoria Cambronero and Sr. Jean Bergado Vocation Promoters for Guam and Taiwan respectively, undertook this journey as an exploratory mission, carrying with them a firm commitment to discern and eventually establish a mission in these lands filled with promise.

Brief historical background of the Timor-Leste
Newest nation in Asia. Timor-Leste or East Timor is located in the easternmost portion of the Island of Timor, which is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, east Asia. After it gained its independence from Portugal in 1975 since the 16th c., Timor finally became a free nation. Nevertheless, because of Indonesia’s geographical proximity to East Timor, Indonesia started its assault to claim the land from the Timoris, launching many bloody attempts to abduct the land. East Timor’s continuous upheaval from 1975 to 2006 took the lives of many Timoris. Historically, the past 30 years has seen the bloodiest war in the land of Timor, successively happed in 2000, 2003 and the worst in 2006. This recent catastrophic war between the Militant Indonesia government and Timor guerrillas ravaged the land of East Timor paving the way for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and other Peace Corps from other western and Asian nations to intervene. Currently, the island nation of Timor is enjoying considerable peace and harmony with its neighbouring countries, evident in the presence of brisk trade and commerce among its people. |
