On November 28,2020 the Institute of the Religious Missionaries of Saint Dominic will officially close St. Joseph's Convent, a ministry and presence dedicated among the aborigines of Santimen Village. The Sisters began this apostolate as early as 1962 taking sporadic apostolic trips and medical missions from the dispensary in Chihshan to the aboriginal settlements in the mountains of Kaohsiung country. Later it was decided that a Hospital be built to serve the needs of the various settlements in the locality and a community was established in 1964. When the health services provided by the Taiwan government has improved, the hospital gave way and a new ministry for the orphans began in 1984. The Sisters also had a Kindergarten school, a day care center for toddlers and a feeding program for the elderly of the village aside from their active involvement in the nearby parish. Through all these years of recreating new forms of ministry in response to the needs of the local Church and the community, the Sisters have dedicated their time and given all their best not only to deliver these services but most importantly becoming a true embodiment of Jesus' mercy and love to the villagers and bringing the Good News of God's kingdom to the little ones. Due to the improving social services of the local government which favors the placement of orphans in real and actual family setting, the Sisters have discerned that the Girl's town has completed its mission. On March 2020,upon the request of the Sisters of the community and endorsed by the Provincial Council the petition to close St. Joseph's Convent and the Santimen Girl's Town was approved by the Prioress General and her Council, thus ending the apostolic commitment among with the Pai Wan tribes; the people we served and loved all through these 56 years. The thanksgiving mass shall be celebrated on the morning of November 28,2020 at the nearby Holy Cross Church with Archbishop Peter Liu of Kaohsiung presiding and Fr. Jarvis Sy preaching. Masalu 修女們 Xio Nimen... (thank You Sisters!) We extend and recognize with heathfelt gratitude and appreciation the countless benefactors who have contributed so much for the support of this apostolic work and we say to them天主保佑你們 Tien Zhu bao yo ni men (May God bless you!) |

Sor Rosario Chiu
60th Anniversary of Religious Profession
Saint Vincent Ferrer Convent, Taipei
22nd of August 2020
On August 22 this year, we arranged a simple and solemn thanksgiving ceremony to celebrate the diamond celebration of the 60th anniversary of the vow of Sister Rosario Chiu. She was born in Luocuo Village, Changhua County on January 15, 1938 into a pagan’s family. A dominican Prist Padre Montero went to Luocuo Zhuang to preach the gospel. Sor Rosario was baptized. When she was five years old, she lived with a Beata of the Dominican Order. She received a good Catholic education there. Therefore, the opportunity sown the seeds of vocation to become a Dominican missionary.
When she was 13 years old, she received six years of middle education at Blessed Imelda’s school in Taipei. After graduation, she seemed to naturally enter the Noviciate in Kaohsiung in 1957 at the age of 19. She also smoothly declared her first vow on August 8, 1960, and then started her first apostle work at Hospital chishan as an asistance for 5 years, and also at Clinic of San Martin of Porres Siaokangfor one more year, to treat illnesses and comfort the suffering people. But the Lord's plans for her were different. From 1967 to 1972, she was sent to Spain and Italy to study. After a period of hard study and work abroad, Sor Rosario deeply realized God’s grace, just as St. Paul wrote in Romans 8:28 : "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." After returning to Taiwan in 1973, Sor Rosario was appointed as Maestra of the novices. At this point, God's plan for Sor Rosario 's life has changed significantly. She was elected as the District provincial in 1983, and as Maestra of the novices again in 1985, and the Priora Provincial in 1988. Elected as a Consejera of the General Assembly of Rome at 1995, until 2007 She returned to Taiwan as the Local Priora of Sandimen for 2 years. and was elected as the Priora Provincial twice. A seemingly simple life, more than sixty years of dedicated life, but there are so many sacrifices and obedience. Her chastity and poverty reflected in her external simplicity is her simple nature. Sor Rosario who seems naughty and informal. In fact it is a self-cultivation of modesty. Sor Rosario said: "I am extremely happy to be a missionary to Saint Dominic. This is the order I have been looking for since the beginning. Thank God!" We also sincerely thank her parents for dedicating her, and the Dominican Beata for giving her the enlightenment Catholic education, and thank her family for their company along the way. And begged God to reward her with abundant grace and health, so that she would continue to dedicate and fulfill her missionary ideal on the way of vocation! |
¡Gracias a Dios!

Gist of the Homily on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of religious profession of Sister Rosario Chiu OP.
delivered by Fr. Jarvis Sy,OP
My dear brothers and sisters, as I have said at the beginning of the mass we are celebrating the feast of Mary as Queen and the 60th anniversary of the religious consecration of our beloved Sister Rosario Chiu. Her consecration is a moment in the her life, in our lives, in the life of the Congregation and the life of the Church.
In today's Gospel we go back to the "moment" in the life of the Virgin of Nazareth, strangely her glorification is also the "moment" a final moment of her pilgrimage of faith.. and in the process we are evoked to come back to the first moment of her life when she said yes to the plans of God.
This "first moment" is the very source of her glorification, her generous acceptance of God's plans and her faithful ascent of obedience to God. It should reminded Mary simply responded yes to God with all her innocence and her totally without thinking that her yes will fill her with joy, but at the same time lead her to great sorrow and pain and finally to glory.. .For this reason she is praised for age to age.
Today after sixty years of dedication and service to the Church and to the sisters, we accompany Sister Rosario back to the first moment of her journey as a Dominican religious. She too in faith, responded to God's call. She too could not imagine how God has led her throughout her years of journey and growth .. and her journey continues in her ripe old age. Today we join her in thanking God for the many gifts bestowed to her, and through her how God has blessed us with her presence and her continued service.
Today we not only celebrate her self giving and consecration but also our common vocation as members of the Dominican family, as those called to consecrate themselves in the priestly or religious life and our call to faith in Jesus Christ. All this calling demands a response, a loving faithful response which one generous souls, souls touched by grace can response without reserve For it is only through this response will be be able to bear all the challenges with joy.
Mary's "yes" demands from her an active participation in God's plan.. her mission. As she was called to incarnate the Word, we are called to bring to life the WORD through our ministry and through our lives. It is only through this unfettered "love " can we be able to exude the gratitude of salvation, and the joy of living the Gospel.
As we join her in thanking God, we pray that we may be confirmed in our shared vocation, in our missionary dedication to serve the local Church and our commitment to live the Gospel message.

Silver Anniversary of Religious Profession
May 30,2020
As I look back to this 25 years of being consecrated to the Lord, I am grateful for the gift of vocation; for the gift of persons; for the lessons in life learned through good and bad experiences, and for the battles won and those that are yet to be conquered. There are two things I learned that I want to share with you: first, when I choose to do good and be good, even if the consequences are severe or the good is difficult to attain, the reward is peace; second, God wants us to be happy, regardless of the circumstances. Happiness is a personal choice. St. Paul, the apostle, who suffered tremendous persecution, encouraged the early Christians to rejoice always in the Lord, because our reward is to be one with Jesus.
In Greek, the word that describes Satan is διάβολος, diablo in spanish and even in tagalog, diavolo in Italian. It is from the verb διαβάλλω
which means to calumniate or to throw accusations at somebody. Satan’s aim is to bring division, which is the exact opposite of Jesus’ invitation that we become one with him. Every time we fall into the devil’s trap to judge people harshly we side with the devil and we become sad because we move farther away from God. To make this easier to remember just think of today. What is it today? Today is Sr. Jackie’s Silver Jubilee. SJ SJ. Don’t be Sad, be Joyful, kick Satan out and let Jesus in. I don’t want to sound presumptuous, this is is only possible with the grace of God.
Finally, I’d like to read out to you what I wrote recently. I found it from my notes last night while I frantically looked for something to share with you today: How would I know what light is if there was no darkness, peace if there was no turmoil, glory if there was no suffering?
Tears may blur my vision but your voice calling my name will lead me back to you. I would not have known that I was lost had you not found me it was only in silence that I was able to hear your voice, calling my name inviting me to share at your table where we can be together as one. You in me and I in you.
